My Dear Friends,

Today is the feast of the Epiphany, also known as the Revelation or 'showing' of Christ to the Gentiles. It commemorates the visit of the Wise Men to the manger and is celebrated in many areas of the world with greater solemnity than Christmas Day!

This was also the case in England before the Reformation. On this feast day it was customary for the head of each household to mark the doorway of the family home with chalk. This tradition symbolized the family's commitment to welcoming Christ into their homes throughout the year. The father took the chalk and wrote on the lintel of the front door: AD 20+C+M+B+13 which stands for "Anno Domini 2013 -- Caspar, Melchior, Balthasar" and means "the three Holy Kings, in the year of Our Lord, 2013 are protecting this house against all evil." If you would like to offer this blessing for your home this year, do ask me for a piece of blessed chalk and a copy of the special blessing prayers.

It was wonderful to see so many people at Mass on New Year's Day. The largest congregation we have had for many a year. Truly it was a prayerful way for us to begin 2013 together.

The special "letter to your MP" is still available both on the parish web page and from the presbytery. I was thrilled by the positive response of so many of you to this issue and commend it to you again.

Finally please keep Abp. Vincent in your prayers at this time. He is in hospital having had a hip replacement and we pray for his speedy recovery!

God Bless.
